Aisle runners were first used in a period when people tracked mud, snow and dirt into churches and brides needed to avoid dragging their gowns on this debris. Hence, the laying out of a white or red runner down the centre aisle just before the entrance of the bride. Today, for most venues indoors, the original problem is no longer an issue.

Having outgrown its origins, some couples still like the quaint look of an aisle runner as generates additional focus and impact for the arrival of the bride. For that reason, we suggest that the aisle runner only be unrolled an usher or two just prior to entrance of the bride. This will add to the moment as everyone anxiously anticipates the moment when the bride appears and makes her symbolic walk down the aisle.

For outdoor ceremonies, most aisle runners tend to be troublesome guests especially if the thin paper or plastic runners are procured. They are played about with the wind, heels penetrate them, and they usually end up becoming a distraction to the the ceremony. They rarely cooperate in the picture perfect manner most people observe in magazine spreads.
